I believe that we must recognize the value of the beings God has given us. He has created beautiful things like flowers, fruits, and animals, and we are naturally attached to them. However, it is not right for a true believer to become overly attached to something that is merely a passing creature, one without an immortal soul. This is a dogma of faith: only human beings have an immortal soul.
Therefore, we must be critical of ourselves and examine our consciences. We need to ensure that we are not excessively attached to passing realities, such as animals or even the beauty of this life’s creation. Instead, we should strive to be more attached to Our Lord and Our God, who is the supreme good and alone can fully satisfy our hearts not a dog or any other creature. He is the only one who can truly fulfill all our desires. In this light, we must accept the separation from even a beloved creature.
Likewise, when we lose a loved one a parent, a child, a sibling, or a dear friend we must accept that separation with the eyes of faith. We will see them again in heaven. There is no resurrection of dogs, cats, or other animals. The resurrection of bodies pertains only to human beings, as stated in our Creed. The Church has never taught that animals will individually rise from the dead. While there is mention in Scripture of a new heaven and a new earth, after the Last Judgment, where God will restore all creation, we do not know exactly how it will be restored. Will the same animals or plants exist? We cannot say for certain.
What we do know is that in heaven, we will be so filled with the love of God that we will not miss anything. Our hearts will be completely satisfied in His presence, and we will not be attached to any creature or thing.
