As St Augustine wrote, and St Thomas Aquinas quoted him when St Peter made a correction to the first Pope Peter, and he made these publicly, not privately, in the Letter to the Galatians, it’s written in an issue which it’s not. It was not so doctrinal, dogmatically, but more a practical or pastoral issue, a failure of Peter, and so and so Paul made this off, and St. Augustine said, Then Peter was so humble and so wise that he accepted this correction.
He did not say, You are Paul, you are against me, you are a heretic, you are schismatic. No, he accepted this with gratitude, and so should be the pope in these days. Thank you, my dear brothers and sons and daughters, when you advise me that there is some danger for the faith, for the common good of the church, I will reflect, I will not be angry against you. And so the pope should also say to the bishops and to the Cardinals, I am not angry against you when you make some even public, when there is no other possibility but the correction of St Paul was public, and even today, and he wrote this in his letter. And this letter is inspired by the Holy Spirit for all generations, until the end of the world, they will read the correction of the first pope as the Word of God. And so Paul made this public today, if Paul were alive today, he would use the internet, because this would be the public means, as in his time, his epistle was, and he sent his epistle to all the churches. And therefore there is, there is no difficulty or problem to me, then the card that four Cardinals published this public appeal to the Pope.
It should be, but I am, it should be, of course, an exceptional situation. But we are witnessing a real and exceptional situation of confusion, which was in some way unprecedented in the history of the church. Because of this, this confusion is growing worldwide, and is reaching almost all aspects, the basic doctrines of the church, not only one specific team, but in the issue of the divorced and the Eucharist, and then the moral law of God itself. So it is basically, and then the relativism that truth can also be at the same level as error. So we are witnessing a crisis of faith, which is really almost universal, and therefore, in such exceptional cases, there could be admitted exceptional means of contribution to help stop this crisis.
