False Ecumenism

Interview Organization: Church Militant
Interviewer Name: Michael Voris

Bishop Schneider criticizes excessive ecumenism in the U.S., emphasizing that Jesus, the apostles, and Church Fathers spoke God’s truth clearly, even when harsh. He stresses speaking truth with love and respect, likening it to a doctor addressing a patient’s illness, to confront spiritual and moral problems responsibly.

Michael Voris: In the United States, there is a tone of ecumenism, where the conversation centers around not offending as your first concern. So if we were talking about Catholic truth, and the majority of America is Protestant, we must speak in such a way as not to upset them.

Bishop Schneider: Yes, this is not the method of our Lord, Jesus Christ, or of the apostles. If it were, our Lord Jesus Christ would not have spoken with the Jews, the Pharisees, or the scribes in the clear and direct manner that He did. He used hard words when necessary to show the untruths of His contemporaries. The same method was used by the apostles. If they had followed this method of ecumenism, they would not have spread the gospel in their lives. The apostles, their followers, the Church Fathers, and the missionaries spoke clearly the truth of God and the commandments of God, which are clear.

Of course, they spoke with love. As St. Paul said in the Epistle to the Ephesians, we have to speak the truth with love. There is also a psychological aspect. The Romans called this captatio benevolentiae, which means you prepare the audience with benevolence to better transmit the truth. You establish an atmosphere of confidence and respect when possible.

Even so, you have to tell the truth. Just as a good doctor tells a patient about their disease with respect and a pedagogical method, we must speak the truth of God clearly. We must not hide anything. When a doctor hides something, it is irresponsible. People need to know what problems they have. Similarly, we have to address the spiritual and moral illnesses of our time.
