The Church’s magisterium has never formally accepted that a pope can lose his office due to heresy. While a pope can be condemned as erring, the pontificate itself cannot be declared invalid. This distinction clarifies that heresy alone does not remove a pope from office.

The magisterium of the church never formally accepted the idea that a pope is losing his office because of heresy. Therefore, cannot do this. He can condemn him as an erring Pope, but not declare his pontificate as invalid. This is the distinction.
