Q440 – What are we, as lay faithful, supposed to think about Pope Leo XIV sending a letter to the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, praising her installation, and Archbishop Flavio Pace receiving a blessing from her?

Bishop Schneider said Vatican gestures toward Lady Archbishop Mullally create confusion among the faithful regarding female ordination and Anglican ordinations. He argued the Holy See should use clearer forms of courtesy that uphold Catholic teaching, noting Pope Leo XIII and subsequent popes rejected recognition of Anglican ordinations and female ordinations.

If you like what we do and want to regularly support our mission to build the Reign of Mary and/or assist the episcopal ministry of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, please consider becoming a Servant of Mary.

This is a huge confusion, and I think these acts contribute further confusion about the efforts within the Catholic Church to promote so-called female ordinations. By these signs, I think the Holy See is giving a very confusing message and recognizing, de facto, this female, not by ordination, but by treating this lady as an archbishop and using the titles. Even worse, in the Vatican, this archbishop received the blessing of this lady vested as a cleric, as a bishop. Therefore, I think all the faithful all over the world became very confused.

The Holy See should not do this and should have chosen other means, clear means of courtesy, but doctrinally clear that the Holy See is not accepting female ordinations and does not recognize ordinations in the Anglican Church as such, even male ordinations, as Pope Leo XIII already very clearly declared. Since then, all the popes have maintained this. So, I lament these gestures from the Holy See toward this so-called Lady Archbishop Mullally.
