Q337 – If Novus Ordo is a heresy, how can attending it still fulfill the Sunday obligation?

The Novus Ordo is not heretical, though it has serious issues. Archbishop Lefebvre acknowledged this but never called it heretical. It can be celebrated reverently, resembling the Traditional Latin Mass, though rarely. Irreverent forms like clown Masses should be avoided. Instead, seek dignified liturgies, even if farther away.

The Novus Ordo is not heretical. It is not heresy. Saying so is wrong. Even Archbishop Lefebvre did not say that the Mass itself is heretical, he never said this. I repeat, even Archbishop Lefebvre said that the Novus Ordo has serious problems. That is one thing, but it is not heretical in itself. It would be wrong to make such a claim.

Of course, the Novus Ordo is celebrated in many different ways. It can be celebrated very piously and devoutly, in an almost traditional fashion, facing the Lord, in Latin, with Communion received kneeling and on the tongue, with Gregorian chant and other elements that are, externally at least, very close to the Traditional Latin Mass. These do exist, but unfortunately, very rarely.

On the other extreme, we have things like clown Masses and entertainment-style liturgies, which are truly disturbing, even approaching blasphemy. We must avoid these irreverent forms of the Novus Ordo, those that include elements of entertainment, such as inappropriate music and performances. I believe we should not attend such liturgies. They are not worthy offerings to God and do not honor Him properly, especially when they resemble charismatic or Protestant-style worship.

It is better not to attend such Masses when there are repeated elements of irreverence in the Novus Ordo. Instead, we should seek out other places to attend Mass, even if it means traveling a longer distance to find a liturgy that is celebrated with dignity, where we can be sure there is no heresy in the preaching and no elements of irreverence in the celebration.
