Question 11 – Did Pope John Paul II Do The Consecration?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: December 13, 2020
In 1984, during the consecration led by Pope John Paul II, Russia was not explicitly mentioned due to political circumstances and Vatican diplomacy, as explained to Cardinal Cordes by the Pope himself. While the act was sincere and accepted by Heaven, a more explicit consecration could still be done. Our Lady's request for the Pope and bishops to unite in this act emphasizes the importance of the Episcopate's participation. It’s not about complete participation, but a moral and meaningful involvement from bishops, potentially through delegates, to ensure a unified consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

It did not happen. I already mentioned this in the previous talks and my book, Christus Vincit. A witness at that time was Cardinal Josef Cordes, a German Cardinal who is now living in Rome, and he is very old. In 2017, when we celebrated the centenary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, he came to Kazakhstan, to Karaganda, as a Papal Legate. During the Mass, he said in his homily the following: He was present at the consecration on the 25th of March in 1984, during which Pope John Paul II prayed before the statue of Fatima, which was brought from Fatima.

In this formula of consecration, he did not explicitly mention Russia, but it was another expression like "those countries whose consecration you wish." So, of course, it was implicitly mentioned in this part. But time after time, Cardinal Cordes was invited by the Pope to a private dinner in his apartment, in the papal apartment. During the dinner, Cardinal Cordes asked this question: "Holy Father, why did you not explicitly mention Russia?" The pope answered him, "This was my intention to do this because of political circumstances and the advice of Vatican diplomacy." "I did this because of the political situation."

So, this was the explanation that the Pope gave to Cardinal Cordes. From this, we can deduce that it was the intention of the Pope, but a bit because of the political situation in ‘84, and he followed the advice of the Vatican diplomats and did not explicitly mention it. Therefore, it could still be done explicitly. Even I consider the first implicit form of the consecration to be a precious act of the Pope. Heaven must have accepted this, as Sister Lucia claimed. Undoubtedly, it was a lovely prayer.

Therefore, heaven accepts all sincere prayers. But we have to distinguish and discern that there is still something that could be done more perfectly. And this, I think, could still be done. And that to your question, which formed concretely, Our Lady asked, the Pope shall do this in union with all the bishops, because even though the Pope is the visible head of the Church, he's also the head of the Episcopal College, of the Episcopal body, the Episcopate.

The Catholic Episcopate is one. It is not divided by the divine constitution. By divine constitution, there are the papacy and the episcopacy. Therefore, to express the fullness of this divine constitution of the Church, and more powerfully, Our Lady also asked the Episcopate, the College of the Bishops, that they should also participate in this form.

I think it's not necessary that this would be an automatic 100% participation, but what is important is that it should be a moral participation, in the sense that there would be real bishops who would pronounce this prayer, which the Pope would give them. In advance, I assume they or some delegates from regional areas will travel to Rome and be present with the Pope so that there could be different forms of this participation and a common form of explicit Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
