Question 1 – Is it OK to Receive Holy Communion on My Hand or Should I Disobey My Bishop?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: December 13, 2020
Receiving Holy Communion on the tongue is objectively more reverent and protects the fragments of the Holy Eucharist. Prohibiting this practice is an abuse of power, as it diminishes the honor due to Christ. You can receive spiritually or, when possible, make a pilgrimage to a place where you can receive on the tongue. Trust in God’s guidance and providence.
If you like what we do and want to regularly support our mission to build the Reign of Mary and/or assist the episcopal ministry of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, please consider becoming a Servant of Mary.

Transcript:

This is not a matter of preference, because it is evident that receiving Holy Communion in the hand is objectively less reverent and more dangerous due to the risk of losing fragments.

Therefore, receiving the Lord directly in the hand is objectively more dangerous. I congratulate all of you who have remained faithful to receiving our Lord on the tongue.

This is not a matter of obedience, because the prohibition by bishops of the faithful receiving on the tongue is an abuse of power. Why? Because this prohibition contributes to a decrease in reverence for our Lord. Our Lord, in the Holy Host, is the Most Holy. He is the King.

To Him, we should give all honors. In this case, these bishops are prohibiting people from giving the greatest possible honor to our Lord while kneeling and receiving on the tongue, which is objectively surer and more reverent.

Therefore, you can continue to receive Holy Communion spiritually, as so many generations of Catholics have done for centuries. They rarely received Holy Communion. I don't mean to support rare Communion, no. I only wish to point out a fact: for so many centuries, these Catholics lived a very deep, committed Christian life, even though they received Holy Communion only a few times a year, and in ancient times, during periods of persecution.

In my own experience in my family, we received Holy Communion very rarely, because there were no priests. But we made spiritual Communions, of course. And so, you can continue to do this. Pray that the Lord will open the door for you to the possibility of receiving Holy Communion on the tongue. Perhaps you can make, occasionally, a pilgrimage to a place where you can receive on the tongue. It would be worthwhile, and depending on your circumstances, you might be able to travel or invite a priest to give you Holy Communion in a private setting.

I hope that divine providence will guide and enlighten you, and that God will reward you for your fidelity to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Father, in the Holy Eucharist.
