Question 76 – The Pope Says That Gossip Is Worse Than The Sins Of The Flesh. Is That True?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: January 13, 2022
While pride is the greatest sin, as seen in Lucifer's fall and Adam and Eve's disobedience, sins of the flesh like fornication and adultery are still dangerous. They can lead to pride, rebellion, and hatred toward God. Therefore, even though not the greatest, these sins are perilous and interconnected.

Transcript:

Substantially, he is right, some saints have said this. We know that the sin of the flesh is not the greatest, but it is pride. Pride is the sin of Lucifer. Adam and Eve were also substantially motivated by this attitude of pride, that we are independent of God and we can decide for ourselves – disobedience. This is also pride. The deepest sin, of course, is hatred toward God.

While this is a traditional teaching, this does not mean that we belittle the sins of the flesh. They are also dangerous because the sins of the flesh, the vice of fornication, adultery, and so on in due time bring people very quickly to the attitude of pride, making them revolt against God and hate Him. It is all connected.

Therefore, we also have to talk about this. When we say that the sins of the flesh are not the greatest, we also have to add that they are still very dangerous and can lead us to the greatest sin of pride and hatred towards God.
