Question 82 – Why Did The Priests Lock The Churches During Covid?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: January 13, 2022
We should ask priests, “Where was your faith?” as many showed more fear for the body than the soul by closing churches. While hygiene and safety were important, the Church has historically cared for the sick and poor. During the plague, St. Charles Borromeo ensured Mass was celebrated publicly, demonstrating faith. This is what priests should have done during COVID.

Transcript:

We have to ask this priest, “Where was your faith?” This is a rhetorical question, maybe, but it demonstrates the lack of faith of these priests and bishops who closed churches. They were more scared and fearful of the body than the soul, the eternal soul. It was a real demonstration of a lack of faith and trust in God, these priests and bishops.

Of course, we could do both, observe the fundamental hygienic and sanitary rules for safety and the possibility of having Holy Mass and the sacraments during these difficult times. During the plague, the Church always offered heroic acts to the poor and the sick, giving them the possibility of receiving the sacraments.

For example, St. Charles Borromeo, a cardinal in Milan, during the plague, had to close the Churches because of the plague. But for me, COVID sickness was not a plague, we cannot simply compare these two. In any case, in those times, the Church closed for a short time for the plague not to spread inside.

But at the same time, he ordered his priests to celebrate as much as possible Holy Masses in public squares and corners. So all of Milan was full of Holy Masses and people could assist them from the windows because these Holy Masses were celebrated on the streets and corners. This is what the Church and the priests should have done.
