Question 86 – Should I Obey My Priest When They Tell Me To Receive Holy Communion In The Hand?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: January 13, 2022
The argument about receiving Holy Communion on the hand versus the tongue is flawed, as both ultimately result in receiving it on the tongue. Kneeling is a sign of reverence, and receiving Communion on the tongue reduces the risk of losing fragments. This issue relates to faith, love, and reverence for Christ's presence.

First, with the argument of the tongue and the hand: I think this is not an intelligent argument. Even when you receive Holy Communion in your hand, you will still put this on your tongue. In any case, you will still receive the Holy Communion on the tongue. And so this argument between the hand and tongue is complete nonsense.

Regarding the question of the exterior and clear signs of reverence, which we are obliged to show to our God, to the incarnated God, whose full divinity is present under the veil of the little host: we are obliged to demonstrate also a public, external, and corporal sign by kneeling. When you are sick or when you have a leg injury then of course you cannot kneel, but this is another case.

Normally, people should receive Holy Communion on the tongue because it substantially lessens the chance of losing the little fragments of the host, which can sometimes attach to the palm of your hand or to your fingers that took the host. All these elements are real risks and dangers of losing the little fragments and pieces of the host that can fall and get trampled by feet.

This is a reality that no one can deny and we have to stress this because this is so serious. This is not an attachment issue nor a secondary question. We have to defend our Lord with our hearts and with all our might, so that not even the tiniest piece or fragment of the consecrated host of the Body of Christ will be in danger. Objectively, what we can do is to receive directly on the tongue and it essentially lessens the danger compared with receiving Holy Communion with your fingers on your hand.

Therefore, this is a question of your conscience, love, and faith in Christ's true presence in the holy host. This is not a question of obedience but of faith and it is very concrete. You have to say, ‘I have to obey God more than man’ because this priest or superior is only human and he only issued an ordinary human command, which is subordinate to the incomprehensible, infinite greatness, and holiness of the Lord in the little host.
