Question 87 – How Should The Priests Respond To The Pope’s Suppression Of Celebrating Private Masses In St. Peters In Rome?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: February 13, 2022
The restriction on individual Mass celebrations, especially in St. Peter’s Basilica, contradicts Church law that guarantees priests' right to celebrate Mass alone. This move undermines the freedom of priests and may lead to a broader suppression of traditional Mass. However, the Church’s history shows that persecution often leads to spiritual growth, and God will use these challenges for greater fruit in His time.

It is surely a very sad measure and I think it is incorrect. According to the law of the church itself and according to the true spirit of the canon law, the church always guarantees that every priest should have the freedom to also celebrate individually. The Church gives this right to priests. Another thing is that no one can be forced to concelebrate. This is also a law of the church, therefore, it is a measure which was taken out in the Basilica of St. Peter and it undermines this law of the church itself.

This is a bad example, and the Holy See is presenting itself to the entire world. Others will maybe imitate this and go against the law of the Church itself. It is a kind of implicit persecution against the individual celebration of the Holy Mass and the priest. And therefore, we have to say this and ask with humility that the Holy See will change this new norm again, according to the law of the Church.

This is the first thing that I would like to say, the other is that the traditional form of the Mass is made impossible to be celebrated inside the basilica itself because, in the traditional form, there is no concelebration. In some ways, thanks be to God, it is still tolerated in the Basilica of St. Peter but only in the grottos below, in the catacombs.

So, the Traditional Mass and the individual Mass are now becoming in Rome, or at least in the Basilica of St. Peter a kind of Clandestine Mass, the Mass of the catacombs. We know that the circumstances and the time of the catacombs of the Clandestine Church brought plenty of fruits for the church. This situation of being persecuted and being forced to go to the catacombs brought abundant fruits for the church. I am convinced and this has always been so in the past, and so it will also be someday.

Therefore, we have to keep the supernatural spirit, that even in this sad situation right now, God will use this for a greater spiritual benefit in his way, which we cannot now understand but God will find a way that even these sad measures will ultimately bring abundant fruits for the Church.
