According to John Paul II and spiritual authors, the sin against the Holy Spirit is the refusal of God’s forgiveness, which the Spirit offers. This sin develops over time through repeated impenitence and hard-heartedness, ultimately making one unable to repent or accept God’s mercy thus, making forgiveness impossible.

Transcript:

Basically, according to John Paul II and some spiritual authors, the sin against the Holy Spirit is the refusal of the forgiveness of sins, which the Holy Spirit transmits. The Holy Spirit is the forgiveness of sins. This refusal is the deepest expression of sin against the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it is not possible to be forgiven when you reject forgiveness. It is not possible to be forgiven; this is the deepest expression of sin against the Holy Spirit.

Traditional catechisms indicate other attitudes that manifest such a sin, such as sinning consciously, or sinning with the hope that you will be forgiven. This is a wrong attitude, which transforms the heart into an impenitent heart, one that basically cannot repent. This leads to error or despair, even in regard to the forgiveness of God.

So, it is a process that unfolds over time. This sin does not, so to speak, happen only once. The sin against the Holy Spirit is such a grave and extraordinary sin that it is prepared by many acts of impenitence and hard-heartedness. It involves accumulating evil to the point where a person will no longer accept the forgiveness of God. This, essentially, is the path to the sin against the Holy Spirit.
