Question 134 – How do we know what feasts to celebrate when we have two calendars in the Roman rite?

Interview Organization: The Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
The Holy See recently added feasts, including St. Padre Pio and John Paul II, to the Liturgical Calendar. John Paul II's feast is optional in the Novus Ordo. The Divine Mercy feast hasn't been added to the Old Missal but may be in the future. There's hope for a unified calendar.

Transcript:

Last year, the Holy See published some additional feasts in the Liturgical Calendar. While I don't have a comprehensive list, I recall that St. Padre Pio and John Paul II were among those added. Notably, the inclusion of John Paul II in the Novus Ordo is an optional feast rather than an obligatory one. As of now, the Divine Mercy has not been added to the Old Missal, but it remains a possibility in the future.

I express the hope that in the future, there will be a unified calendar for both forms of the Mass. This unified calendar would adopt the traditional order of readings and the traditional calendar, incorporating any new feasts introduced over the last 60 years. Following the current challenges, it is my aspiration that the Holy See will objectively reflect on this matter and establish a single, common calendar and order of readings based on the traditional form rather than the new one.
