Question 143 – What is the proper posture during the Creed?

Interview Organization: The Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
The form of the Mass influences behaviors observed during Low and Solemn Masses. In Low Mass, the Creed is recited standing, with a genuflection at "Incarnatus Est." In Solemn Mass, the priest may sit while the congregation sings the Creed, though they bow their heads at "Incarnatus Est." Traditions may vary, with some priests remaining standing.
If you like what we do and want to regularly support our mission to build the Reign of Mary and/or assist the episcopal ministry of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, please consider becoming a Servant of Mary.

It depends on the form of the Mass. We know that we have Low Masses and Solemn Masses, which is the basic difference. There are different behaviors to be observed in a Solemn Mass than in a Low Mass. In the Low Mass, the Creed is spoken out while standing, and then a genuflection is made during the words "Incarnatus Est" (and he was conceived), then stand again for the rest of the Creed.

In the Solemn Mass, the priest can sit down while the faithful sing the Creed. Sometimes, it could be longer, depending on the Mass. In these cases, the faithful can also sit but have to bow their heads to the words "Incarnatus Est". On Christmas Day or the Annunciation, when singing even while sitting down in the Solemn Mass, the faithful should genuflect on the words "Incarnatus Est".

The posture can also depend on the tradition. In some Solemn Masses, the priest does not sit down during the Creed but stands. You can do both forms, but it also depends on the local tradition.
