Question 157 – What is the difference between a Gregorian Mass and a regular Holy Mass?

Interview Organization: The Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: January 13, 2023
The Holy Mass embodies the same sacrifice of Christ at Golgotha, with varying spiritual fruits based on participation. Offering Mass for specific intentions often involves financial contributions, supporting the priest's efforts. Gregorian Masses require daily celebration for 30 days, justifying higher stipends for this dedicated form of worship.
If you like what we do and want to regularly support our mission to build the Reign of Mary and/or assist the episcopal ministry of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, please consider becoming a Servant of Mary.

The Mass is the same, there cannot be a greater and a lesser Mass because the Holy Mass is the sacramental celebration of the sacrifice of Golgotha in Christ. This is the same sacrifice. The difference lies in how much a person participating in the Mass draws the spiritual fruits of the sacrifice, whether it be the priest or the individual. However, there are general fruits of the sacrifice in each Mass celebration. The sacrifice of Golgotha is present, and the graces of God's redemption are poured out on the entire world in a general way. It is upon each person to accept these fruits of the sacrifice of the cross in the Holy Mass and to apply them.

This is the essence of offering Mass for a specific intention, and people can contribute their participation in a concrete way, such as with a material contribution, in our case, a financial contribution. It is a sign of their participation in the exterior sacrifice and also serves the purpose of sustaining the priest in his life. The stipend for the Gregorian Masses may vary depending on the established norms in each diocese, but the Gregorian Mass is one that the priest must celebrate uninterruptedly for 30 days. This requires a significant effort from the priest, having to be attentive and dedicating every day to this specific intention.

Therefore, it is justifiable that one can require a higher stipend for this form of Mass.
