Question 171 – How should we interpret our Pope’s actions involving Orthodox priests and nuns being displaced from their homes and vocations?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: March 13, 2023
There is a concerning trend from the Holy See to alter the charism of cloistered nuns, pressuring them to leave their cloistered life for formation sessions. This undermines the church's treasured tradition of cloistered life, resembling past political persecution. Nuns should resist these changes and remain steadfast in their vocation, praying for the Pope and the Church to recognize and preserve their essential role.

Yes. In previous years, we have observed a systematic plan from the Holy See to change the charism of cloistered nuns and force them into so-called formation and federation sessions, compelling them to leave their cloistered life and travel to different sessions. This destroys the church’s precious treasure of a strict cloistered life. This is the latest route of persecution employed by the Holy See. We must acknowledge that this is a form of persecution, a kind of destruction of the cloistered life.

This is an attack similar to what political regimes in the past did, and essentially, the Holy See is perpetuating it today. This constitutes the destruction of the cloistered life. I believe the sisters should resist and preserve this treasure for the sake of the entire church and all souls. It would be false obedience to comply with orders that change the cloistered life from Rome.

This is a temporary phenomenon, and this too shall pass. They should remain in their charism and pray for the Pope, the Vatican, and the Holy See, asking that they be illuminated by God to cease the destruction of the cloistered life.
