Question 197 – What is the traditional teaching about Judas?

Interview Organization: The Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt

We must be cautious about spreading claims, such as Pope Francis having a breviary picture of Judas, until verified. The Church has no official teaching on Judas' fate, though the Holy Friday liturgy implies God gave merits to all, including Judas. Scripture suggests Judas' eternal condemnation, as stated by Jesus and Peter.

Well, first, I think we have to be careful to spread the news that Pope Francis has his breviary picture of Judas. We have to be careful; this must be proven first. Then there is no official teaching of the church about the destiny of Judas. Implicitly, in the Holy Friday liturgy or the prayer of Holy Friday, the church in the old liturgy says that God gave merits to each one, and Judas also.

And we know that our Lord Jesus Christ said it would be better if these men did not bear. So it is a very serious affirmation of our Lord. And Peter says in the Acts of the Apostles, he described how Judas committed suicide. And all of his internal organs came out. And then St. Peter said that he went to the place to receive his reward. So there are more indications in Holy Scripture and the tradition of the church about the latest condemnation of Judas. And even though there are no formal declarations of the church about this, the church is more inclined to accept from Holy Scripture the indications about the eternal condemnation of Judas.
