Question 219 – How do we know that we are doing God’s will?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: September 13, 2023
To fulfill God's will, we must first follow the Ten Commandments. Additionally, we must fulfill the duties of our state in life, such as caring for our family if we're parents or working honestly if we're employees. Good intentions, rooted in love for God, should guide our actions. Prayer and counsel help discern God's will in vocational decisions.
If you like what we do and want to regularly support our mission to build the Reign of Mary and/or assist the episcopal ministry of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, please consider becoming a Servant of Mary.

Transcript:

First, the “Ten Commandments.” You must observe the Ten Commandments that God gave us; this is His will. Go through the Ten Commandments, as they are very clear. The second thing to do is fulfill the duties of your state. This is very important and a sure sign that you are doing the will of God. So, when you are a father or mother of a family, you must take care of your family; this is your primary duty. Take care of your children.

What is connected to the duties of parents? For example, when you are a worker, you must do your work honestly. And when you give commands to others, you must be just with them to carry out your duty properly. This is the correct way according to the Law of God, your conscience, as well as justice and charity. So, follow the duties of your state.

As St. Francis de Sales wrote in his book On True Devotion, there is a famous expression: he said that if a bishop were to live the life of a Carthusian monk, hiding himself away in the cloister, he would not be fulfilling his duty, because a bishop must go out to visit the palaces and preach. Likewise, if a Carthusian were to leave the monastery and go out to preach, he would not be fulfilling his duty either; it would not be true devotion, nor the will of God. These are concrete examples.

Sometimes, we cannot always know concretely what God's will is in a given situation. For example, how do you choose your vocation when you are young? Should you marry, remain single, or enter a religious life? We must pray earnestly, seek the counsel of good priests, and then follow what resonates most strongly in our souls. God will show you clear signs to help you choose your life state.

And, of course, good intentions must always accompany us in everything we do. If we are observing the Law of God, we should do so with the intention of loving God more. For example, as a father or mother of a family, if you work hard to take care of your children and provide for your family, you should do it not only because it is your duty, but because you want to love God and glorify Him. These are the good intentions we should always have.
