Question 261 – Why is holy water denied to the faithful during Lent? Is this okay?

Holy water holds significance as a sacrament, offering blessings, graces, and even indulgences. Taking it away during Lent has no meaning, as holy water serves as protection for the faithful. In the past, holy water was removed during the Holy Triduum to prepare for the blessing of new holy water, but this was not done throughout the entire period.

No, there is no meaning to this because holy water is always considered a sacramental. When you use holy water, you are receiving blessings and actual graces from the Lord, and even some partial indulgences. Therefore, it has no meaning to remove this water during Lent or in the lead-up to it, especially when holy water is blessed with specific blessings.

It also serves as protection for the faithful. In former times, I think it was during the Holy Triduum, particularly on Holy Friday, that holy water was removed in anticipation of the blessing of the new holy water at the Easter Vigil. This was discussed in some places, but it was not a widespread practice during the entire Lenten period.
