Question 32 – Should Catholic Pro-Abortion Politicians Be Denied Holy Communion?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: March 13, 2021
Pro-abortion politicians should be denied Holy Communion because their public advocacy for the murder of innocent children directly contradicts the Gospel and Church teachings. Refusing them communion is an act of charity, protecting their souls from further sin. Historically, St. Ambrose’s courage in denying Emperor Theodosius communion serves as an example. Excommunication, aimed at repentance and conversion, should be applied to those supporting abortion, euthanasia, and immoral lifestyles to preserve the holiness of the Church and guide souls toward salvation.

Of course, they are not permitted to receive Holy Communion if they openly advocate the horrific, horrible murder of an innocent child. This is a public sin because they are announcing their support to the world. The Church would implicitly support the death of an innocent child if it permitted these pro-abortion politicians to receive Holy Communion. It would be in direct contradiction to both the Gospel and Church teachings. We also have to gravely understand the sacredness of the Holy Eucharist. As St. Paul said, whoever is eating the body of Christ unworthily has both external and temporal consequences. We have to protect the holiness of the Eucharist, the Bread of heaven here on earth. Whoever treats God in an earthly manner will be punished, as it is written in the Scriptures.

It is an act of charity to refuse them to receive Holy Communion. How so? We are preventing them from committing the grave sin of blasphemy and desecration of the Holy Eucharist. They ought to be grateful to the Church and the priests who refuse to administer Holy Communion to protect their souls from mortal sin. Their denial of Holy Communion may catalyze the awakening of their conscience and lead them to conversion. This is one of the first acts of mercy, to call someone to conversion.

Historically, a great example would be St. Ambrose of Milan. In those times, Emperor Theodosius the Great committed grave sins. He ordered the murder of more than 7,000 people in a stadium in Thessalonica, Greece; this was called the Massacre of Thessalonica. St. Ambrose admonished Emperor Theodosius to demonstrate repentance for the massacre but he dismissed the matter. The Emperor was a devout Christian and attended Sunday Mass regularly, but when he was about to approach the Church in Milan, St. Ambrose went out and denied him entrance unless he made public penance.

This bishop has incredible courage. Imagine he could reprimand the powerful Emperor Theodosius the Great. Another influential person today is the President of the United States of America, Mr. Joe Biden. If the President were ever to enter the cathedral in Washington, the bishop of Washington should reprimand him like how St. Ambrose reprimanded the Emperor. This is the proper action of a Catholic Bishop.

Another question is the matter of canonical excommunication. According to canon law, anyone actively participating in a complete abortion is automatically excommunicated. Furthermore, I believe this is worth writing in Canon Law in the future: that those who publicly support evil acts such as abortion, euthanasia, homosexual lifestyle (sodomy), same-sex unions, and blessing same-sex unions should be automatically excommunicated. Why? Because this is a grave scandal and sin for the Church. We always have to remember that the true intention of excommunication is not punishment but a call for healing through repentance and conversion to save the soul. This is the true aim of the church: the salvation of souls for the greater glory of God.
