Question 37 – What Should a Priest Do If He Gets “Cancelled”?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
If a priest is punished without objective reason, it is unjust. However, if the punishment stems from preaching the Traditional Catholic faith or celebrating the Traditional Mass, it is unreasonable. The priest should continue his ministry clandestinely, but avoid forming a sect. He must respect his superiors, avoid slander, and focus on administering the Sacraments, praying for the Pope, bishops, and the faithful, while maintaining humility, prudence, and fervor for souls' salvation.

If he is punished innocently without an objective reason. It is a different matter. However, if a priest is punished for an ideological reason, particularly if he is preaching the Traditional Catholic faith or celebrating the Holy Mass in the traditional form, I believe that these penalties are totally unreasonable and without merit. I would counsel the priest to carry out his priestly ministries in a clandestine manner.

In particular, during this trying time, he has to administer the Sacraments to the people more than ever. However, I would advise this priest to take great care to avoid beginning a sect. Even with the best intentions, there have been instances where sects have been emerging driven by schismatic mentality and anger. This was not the spirit of Christ and the Saints.

The priest should keep treating his superiors with respect and compassion, especially those who chastised him. He should not publicly slander those who persecuted him. His aim is to bring the graces and sacraments to the faithful and not to engage in polemics. He needs to continue praying for the Pope, the Bishop and the people of God. He must remain humble, prudent and full of fervor for the salvation of souls.
