Question 7 – What Should a Priest Do When His Bishop Has Heretical Views?

Interview Organization: Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima
Interviewer Name: Christopher P. Wendt
Date: December 13, 2020
In the Catholic Church’s hierarchical structure, bishops do not automatically lose authority for teaching heresy. Only the Pope can remove a bishop. The faithful should respectfully admonish the bishop, pray, and if necessary, report errors to the Pope. Rome must intervene to protect the purity of the faith.

Transcript:

Bishops do not automatically lose their authority. The Catholic Church is a hierarchical church structure and objectives.

We are not a Protestant sect, where, let us say, a preacher or Protestant preacher starts to teach heresy, and then the local community decides that he is no longer a pastor.

This is subjectivism. This is not possible in the Church. The church has to be hierarchical. And therefore, when a bishop is spreading heresies, he does not automatically lose his office. But he can only lose his office by the decision of the Pope. The Pope is the visible head of the College of Bishops and the Supreme Pastor of the Church with authority.

Therefore, in this case, the faithful will have to admonish the bishop in a respectful way, pray for his conversion, and do penance for him. Then, when this is not helping, write to the Pope, demonstrating the documentation, the errors, and the heretical teachings of the bishop, and asking the Pope to intervene.

The Pope must intervene. This is one of his first tasks: to provide the purity of the faith in the Church. Therefore, he has to admonish the bishop, and when the bishop will not stop his heretical teaching, the Pope has to remove him quickly. Otherwise, when Rome does not intervene, it is a kind of implicit collaboration with heresy. It's evident.

Therefore, in former times, it was a sign of Rome, of all the Popes, that there were very effective, efficacious interventions in such cases. So, we hope that after this crisis, the Holy See will again reassume its duty to protect the faithful from the wolves.
